Ian Wilson (cornet)

Ian started playing the cornet aged 7 in his primary school band in Armthorpe. Aged 10 he joined the local band Armthorpe Elmfield, near Doncaster. After rising through the cornet section, aged 16 he joined Carlton Main Frickley on repiano cornet. After a two-year stay it was time to head to Hull University and joined the Cottingham Band under Richard Grantham on their way up through the sections.

Wanting to be a student forever, a move up north followed to Newcastle University for a PhD, more playing with the Felling band and also meeting a Northern Irish girl, Helen (the future Mrs Wilson). Real life then intervened with commuting to work and a young family meaning the cornet got dispatched to the loft for 18 years.

After playing with a few ‘Norn Iron’ bands over the past few years he's happily settled at Downshire Downshire.
