Brendan Coyle (trombone)
Brendan began playing the trombone at the age of 10 and initially progressed through the WELB music service under the tutelage of several fine musicians including Stewart Hague, Ken Goodman, Bob Quick and Richard Ashmore. After a brief initial exposure to the world of banding through the Strabane-based St. Joseph’s Brass Band, the majority of Brendan’s playing experience has been gained through a range of other ensembles, including the WELB & CBSM Youth Orchestras, Ulster Youth Orchestra, QUB Symphony Orchestra and QUB Big Band to name but a few.
Brendan returned to banding in March 2010, taking up the solo trombone seat at Downshire Brass. Since then, he has enjoyed a ‘purple patch’ in his playing career, being a regularly featured soloist with the band and picking up a number of soloist prizes at a variety of contests. An active, energetic and dedicated bandsman, Brendan has also served as Secretary of the band since 2013 and became conductor of the Downshire Brass Youth Band in the same year.
Downshire Brass has provided Brendan with an amazing array of playing opportunities, an escape from his work as a Ph.D. Candidate at the QUB School of Law, and most importantly a beautiful fiancée in the form of the band’s Flugel horn player, Amy Wilson!
