Joe Murray (cornet)

Joe began his musical career on piano at age 10. He started his brass playing at age 15 in the 34th Belfast Boys’ Brigade Company Silver Band initially on euphonium, then after a year moving to principal cornet!

In 1980 Joe joined the Reid Memorial Silver Band but briefly left for a 3 year spell to play 1st Baritone for Laganvale Silver before returning and becoming one of the founder members of Downshire Brass.

In the band, Joe has played soprano, B flat cornet and baritone but in 1989, he moved to flugel a seat he occupied until April 2014 when he moved back to the front row cornet bench.

In addition to Downshire, Joe is also a uniformed Salvationist and plays solo cornet with the Band of the Sydenham Salvation Army Corps where he is also the Corps pianist and the Songster Brigade Piano Accompanist.

Joe has virtually no free time outside his Downshire and Salvation Army duties but unfortunately does have to spend some time at work where he is a Chartered Accountant running his own accountancy practice.
