Neil Stephenson (euphonium)
Neil started his banding journey at the tender age of 8 years old, when a parent at his primary school decided to start a brass band. This baby-faced youth was handed a large piece of metal with tubes and things, was told it was a euphonium and he has been trying to play it ever since.
Being involved from its inception, Neil and the Ashgrove Brass Band rose through the various sections of the Northern Ireland Brass Band movement from music festivals to the lofty heights of the Championship section. During this time, he was fortunate to have been conducted by a number of highly respected conductors including Roy Newsome, Robert Childs and Gary Cutt. A particular banding highlight was accompanying the Childs brothers at a BBL anniversary concert under the baton of Mr. Richard Evans.
Having been with Ashgrove for nearly 21 years, Neil decided the time was right for a change and joined Downshire Brass in 2001 on principal euphonium. Since then, he has regularly featured as a soloist with the band at concerts, contests and on recordings and is proud to be part of one of the hardest working bands in the province.
