Downshire Brass Community Band

Downshire Brass Community Band launched in February 2026 with an impressive turn-out of players on a full-range of brass band instruments. The ensemble, under the leadership of Downshire’s MD, Prof Michael Alcorn, aims to plug a gap in the banding scene in Northern Ireland. The group comprises adult players of various experience levels who are keen to make music with like-minded players.

A core part of the membership is built around our “Couch to Concert” (C2C) 2025 programme, which saw 22 aspiring adult musicians come together from mid-September 2025 for a 12-week journey into the joy and excitement of brass band playing. The remainder of the band includes former Downshire Brass players and others who played previously in bands across Northern Ireland.

Repertoire on the stands from week one included “Pastime with Good Company”, “Groovy Kind of Love”, “I will Follow Him” and a range of hymn tunes to warm-up.

The focus of the band is to make music in a non-contesting environment, enjoying the company of fellow musicians, and to perform at concerts and events in the months ahead.

We are keen to welcome more players! If you are interested in joining, then please see below for some more information about the group and an expression of interest form. We’d be delighted to hear from you.
