Busy Day in Armagh for Downshire Brass

It was a memorable day for Downshire Brass as both the Senior Band and the newly formed Community Band took to the stage at the 2026 North of Ireland Brass Band Championships, held at Armagh's Market Place Theatre on Saturday 17 October.

The Senior Band achieved fourth place in the Championship Section, competing alongside Northern Ireland's finest brass bands. Performing Afterlife by Stijn Aertgeerts, the band delivered a strong and confident performance of this technically demanding work, earning 191 points, just six behind the winning band, Laganvale. Following weeks of intensive rehearsals, the performance was a fitting reward for the commitment and hard work of the players.

The day was particularly special for the Community Band, making its first-ever appearance at the NIBA Championships in the non-competitive Community Brass category. Established only in February 2026, the band has made remarkable progress in a short period. Many members have been playing for little more than a year, while some only began learning a brass instrument six months ago through Downshire's Couch to Concert programme.

Their performance of Slaidburn, Ellers and Selection from Grease was a wonderful achievement and demonstrated just how much can be accomplished through enthusiasm, commitment and the joy of making music together.

Both bands were conducted by Musical Director Professor Michael Alcorn MBE, with valuable support from Associate Conductor Richard Ashmore in preparing the Senior Band.

Congratulations to Laganvale on winning the Championship Section, and to all the other prizewinning bands. Thanks also to the NIBA Executive for organising another excellent event.

With two successful performances behind them, Downshire Brass now turns its attention to a busy programme of concerts and performances leading up to Christmas.
